Mobile Cloud Computing

"Cloud computing”, a common term for applications where remote processing and data storage are accessed via the Internet (such as Software as a Service [SaaS] and Platforms as a Service [PaaS]) has become a popular buzz word on many IT forums. Cloud computing is being called out as a “disruptive technology” and according to ABI Research - one billion users will access the “cloud” by 2014. Aggressive growth companies are interested in these web applications because of the reduced infrastructure profile, maintenance costs, deployment, and upgrade costs.

Following closely behind the growth of cloud computing is mobile cloud computing. While there are currently only a few well known mobile cloud applications for consumers, like Gmail and Google maps, many more are in development. Mobile cloud computing will become the predominant way that mobile applications function one day. The largest advantages to mobile cloud computing are:

  • One Application for All Devices: Applications hosted in the cloud eliminate the requirement that the application be tied to a single cell phone service provider (i.e. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or T-Mobile) or mobile device.
  • Capabilities Boost: Mobile devices do not have the processing power or memory space required on the device itself for intensive applications. Cloud computing provides a tremendous leap in functionality and the amount of data the application can access.
  • Data Not Tied to the Device: Mobile devices fail, are lost or sometimes destroyed. However with cloud computing critical data is preserved, because it is stored on the cloud, not on the device.
  • Low Cost for Set-up & Maintenance: Users only pay for the infrastructure they use. Organizations can easily scale applications and happily avoid the hassle of maintaining servers and equipment.

Enterprise Adoption

Corporations are taking the savings and the efficiency output gained by cloud computing and multiplying the fiscal advantages in using the same technology for mobile applications(1). Mobile cloud computing offers the data sharing and processing power anywhere you need it—great for streamlining supply chain management, improving customer relationships and much more. In an increasingly competitive environment many companies are finding they must adopt this up and coming technology(2).

  1. More detail can be found in a 2009 cloud computing research study by IBM Market Insights. The study said 77% of companies were interested in cloud computing for the cost savings (hardware, software licenses, labor costs, IT support, and outside maintenance costs). The time/value ratio for simplifying upgrades, installations, and scaling IT was a close second, noted by 70% of those surveyed.
  2. According to a 2009 study done by Ziff Davis Enterprise Research more companies are evaluating cloud computing than ANY other emerging technology and more than twice as many companies are using it than last year.
